CASE STUDY OF A PROJECT MANAGER

 

Rakesh was appointed as a project manager of a company. His job role included client management(handling & resolving client queries in terms of project delivery ), process management (striving for continuous improvements so that the processes can be simplified more & more) & people management (looking after employees so that they are happy to stay with the company for a long time.) There were 10 teams, in each team there were 9 members & 1 supervisor thereby making the total number of reporters to 100.

Rakesh found that a few changes have to be made in the modus operandi. Most of the activities were people dependent & there were no documented approaches for those activities, A lot of non-value-add activities were also being done & those were wasting a lot of man-hours. In certain areas, outdated technologies were being used & this resulted in the company losing out to its competitors during project bids.

Rakesh had an uphill task in front of him. He decided to follow the below approach to bring about the changes.

1: Formed a core team of experts based on performance & voting to identify the pain areas, the core team included 2 members from each team.

2: Taking help of the core team to make employees understand the importance of changes, how they would be benefited & assuring them that it would not impact their jobs.

3: Daily team meetings with the core team to identify the pain areas & plan of how new technologies can be implemented.

4: Training on new technologies & rolling them out in phases to minimize disruptions if any

5: Gradually the changes became a part of everyone's behavior.
